Hi Paris,

Thank you very much for your question. It is one that I am asked rather frequently from both men and women alike.

First, let me just say that it is NOT possible to "spot reduce" from any particular area of the body. It is a myth that crunches and sit-up will reduce body fat in the abdominal area. You can do those exercises until you're blue in the face but you will not get that desired effect. Sure, you'll have stronger ab muscles but you still will not be able to see them. When body fat reduction happens it will take effect throughout the body.

Your question has a nutritional and physical activity component to it. For the greatest level of body fat loss, it is necessary to focus your attention in both areas.

It is imperative that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. Your diet should include an adequate distribution of protein, carbohydrates and fats throughout the day, every day. It should be comprised of whole grains, vegetables, fruit, lean meats and fish. You will need to determine the appropriate number of calories you should consume each day to bring about the reduction of body fat. Go to www.fitday.com to calculate your daily caloric needs, expenditures and for other very useful nutritional support. Finally, you must burn MORE calories than you consume.

Strength training and cardiorespiratory training are proven forms of exercise to reduce body fat and change your body composition. It is recommended that you get more than 30 minutes of cardiorespiratory training on most days and 2+ days of strength training. You will likely need more than what recommended here for a healthy loss of body fat.

The bottom line? Make healthy eating and a high level of physical activity a priority in your life. Soon you will be a lean, mean loving machine!!

I hope this was helpful. Good luck and keep me posted. I look forward to answering any other questions you have.

Be well.
